Island Focal Point
In 2017, islands (and peninsulas) continue to get bigger and more functional. Virtually 100% of kitchen islands are now “single-level” and this makes them even more functional than ever. Because they’re no longer obscured by the 2nd higher level, islands are now “the” focal point of the kitchen, and as such, the surface is in the spotlight. There has never been more spectacular choices of granite and quartz. You can see over 150 varieties in the Remodeling Expo Center Kitchen & Bath Showroom.
Along with the counter top, there is an ever-increasing variety of sink choices, like the farmhouse sink and the gray, black or stainless under-mount sink. Just because the openness of the kitchen allows light to flow through, don’t forget about task lighting; under the cabinets and pendants above the island focal point.
Good News! You may be out of storage space now, but there’s more coming. Re-designing your kitchen can yield 50% or more of additional space. Space can be found by eliminating blind corner cabinets, incorporating multiple roll-out trays and installing taller, 42” wall cabinets. Yes, the wallpapered soffit above the present cabinets will need to go, but the taller cabinets will provide more storage and make the room feel bigger.
Don’t forget about the new island; under the countertop, there is plenty of room for more cabinets, wine rack, beverage refrigerator, cookbook shelf, etc. Finally, it’s time to get rid of the 1990’s built-in cluttered kitchen desk. It’s obsolete, so integrate it into the kitchen and this will provide even more storage.
