Who doesn’t want a dream kitchen? This space is considered by many to be the heart of the home, and as such, needs to be functional and aesthetically pleasing or you and your family may not want to hang out in this space.

A kitchen remodel is the number one remodeling project completed in a home. If you are looking to remodel this room, you may find yourself wondering how to plan and design such an important space, especially if you have no interior design experience. Here are seven steps you should follow when you are looking to get the kitchen of your dreams.

Step 1: Start By Compiling Kitchen Ideas

Before any home improvement project can be started, you first must decide what you want. Compiling ideas helps to show you what options are out there and helps you to pick out what most interests you.

Are you looking for certain types of cabinets or countertops? Do you want certain features within the space? Are there certain finishes you are looking to incorporate?

Each and every person has a different idea as to what the perfect kitchen consists of. Start compiling ideas from places like magazines and Pinterest so you can begin to find and pull ideas that have the most allure to you.

Step 2: Find Ways to Maximize Your Kitchen Layout

Kitchens vary in shape, size, and dimensions. As such, what increases functionality and space in one kitchen may not do the same in another. As you design your new space, you want to find ways to maximize the dimensions you have through both the layout you select and the appliances, cabinets, and other features you include.

Some of the items that can be used to maximize space and functionality include:
– Ceiling height cabinets for increased cabinet space
– Islands for increased countertop space
– Recessed lighting to make a space seem taller
– Wall to wall cabinets to use up all of the wall space
– Cabinets with hidden functions, like space racks or lazy Susans

Selecting a great layout and selecting items that increase the functionality of a kitchen help to ensure that all of the space is put to use. This gives you both the storage space and the workspace you need to truly make this room the heart of your home.

Step 3: Select the Right Kitchen Renovation Contractor

Once you have ideas in mind and a layout in place, it is time to hire a kitchen renovation contractor to help make your vision a reality. This may seem like an easy task, but selecting the right contractor has a direct effect on the price you will pay for the completion of your dream kitchen, how much time it will take to complete, and the quality of the workmanship.

As you go about selecting the right contractor to transform your current space, you will want to meet with at least three different contractors to get quotes and to learn about them. This will give you the opportunity to learn about the company and decide whether you want to work with them on your remodeling project.

Some of the questions you should ask when you meet with a contractor include:
– Are you licensed?
– Do you carry insurance?
– How long have you been in business?
– Do you carry any accreditations?
– Do you use sub-contractors or only in-house employees?
– Do you have references and can I talk to them?
– How much do you think my project will cost to complete?
– Are my wants realistic compared with my budget and amount of kitchen space?

Once you have found the company you are happy with, you will sign a construction contract with them to begin work on your kitchen renovation.

Step 4: Settle On the Details

After signing a contract with a construction company, you will sit down with the company or a building supply company and settle on all of the finishes for your space.

This is where you will pick out the type of cabinets, countertops, light fixtures, backsplash, sink and faucets, and flooring you want for the space.

It can be overwhelming, but sticking to the color schemes and textures you decided on when you were brainstorming ideas as well as sticking to your budget will help you select the right materials that you will love for many years to come.

Step 5: Get the Permits You Need

At this point in time, it is almost time to start the building process. But before that can happen, the construction company must first obtain any permits that are needed.

The exact permits that are needed for a remodel project vary based on the city, county and state that your home is located in. A great construction company knows what permits to pull and will pull them on your behalf.

Step 6: Start the Building Process

After permits are pulled, the building process can finally begin.

The first step in remodeling is actually often demolition. This involves removing old cabinets, countertops, and flooring. If an item isn’t being refurbished or reused, it is removed.

Once the space is demolished, the new kitchen can be installed.

Step 7: Complete the Building Process

The last step in the remodeling project is to complete the building process.

As the project comes to an end, a contractor will have you do a couple of walk-throughs. This is your opportunity to point out any potential issues you see, such as uneven paint lines or missing electrical plates.

The construction company will finish up the work and make the repairs or corrections requested.

By the end of the process, you will be left with a dream kitchen that is everything you hoped it would be and more.
